Patrick McDermott
Vice President, Revenue Cycle

Sutter Health

Patrick McDermott serves as the Vice President, Revenue Cycle for Sutter Health, a 27 hospital integrated delivery health system in Northern California. Patrick’s Shared Services team collected a record $6.35 billion dollars in 2018 to fund the not-for-profit mission of hospitals, reduced actual expenses by $2.4 million, and raised employee satisfaction scores 3 years in a row. Previously, Patrick led the revenue cycle for Presence Health (Chicago) for 8 years, a 12 hospital healthcare system in Illinois which resulted from the merger of Resurrection Healthcare and Provena Health. Patrick’s approach focuses the team on “end to end” process integration to eliminate the revenue leakage in the front, middle, and back-end functions. Patrick’s team balances the improvement of workflow, technology, training, metrics, and culture to create rapid and sustainable performance improvement. Patrick’s career started with consulting firms Stockamp & Associates (now Huron consulting) and KPMG which sparked his passion for improving hospital balance sheet and income statement performance. Patrick holds an M.B.A in Finance from University of Illinois where he tutored student athletes in statistics and taught “Organizational Behavior” to undergraduate business students. Patrick has deep experience in shared services, restructuring, EPIC go-lives, and LEAN initiatives. With enthusiasm to help managers and staff progress in their careers, Patrick invented a course called “Revenomics 101” which won the HFMA Yerger award for innovative training delivered to members. Patrick as board member assisted the Illinois and California HFMA chapters with their professional development programs and was nominated to the National HFMA Advisory Board. Lastly, Patrick was previously an advisor for the American Hospital Association (AHA), a Board of Examiner for the Ohio Partnership for Excellence, and is a regular presenter for HFMA, HBI, ACA, and Becker conferences.
